Yes, completely. Every drive, score, PASS or FAIL verdict, written debrief and guided route is free — for learners and for instructors. There's no subscription, no in-app purchase and no card needed.

ClutchUp is designed to keep only what it needs in order to give you feedback. Mirror-check analysis runs on your device using Apple's on-device Vision framework, and facial footage is never uploaded or transmitted — only derived results such as timestamps and head-turn summaries leave your phone.

The rear camera is used exactly once, before the drive, to confirm the phone is facing the road — nothing is captured through it while you drive. Review clips are silent (no audio is ever recorded), stay on your phone, and are deleted once reviewed — within 48 hours at most. A drive can also be recorded with no camera at all. Yes. Sensors only uses just your phone's motion sensors and GPS and never opens a camera at all — and your drive is still scored in full on speed, braking, cornering and progress.

The camera is an optional extra you choose before each drive: Sensors + mirror checks adds brief front-camera checks before turns so your mirror habits are marked too. You can decline the camera permission entirely and keep using the app. See how the modes compare.

No. ClutchUp is an independent app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) or any other government body. Its feedback is modelled on the style of a test debrief, but it is not an official assessment and carries no official standing.

No. ClutchUp complements professional lessons and private practice — it doesn't replace them. It is not a driving instructor, a driving school, an examiner, or a substitute for a qualified supervising driver, and AI feedback can be wrong or incomplete.

Always follow your instructor, your supervising driver, the Highway Code and the law, and make sure you're driving legally and safely — properly supervised, insured, and with L plates displayed.

Not on its own — and we won't pretend otherwise. ClutchUp marks what it can measure (your speed against the limit, braking, cornering, hesitation, and mirror checks before turns) against the real test's pass rules. Your real test also covers things a phone can't see: manoeuvres, observation at junctions, signalling, and your judgement of other road users.

A ClutchUp PASS means the things it measured were at a passing standard on that drive — a genuinely useful signal, and an honest one. Your instructor is the person to tell you when you're ready to book.

It marks what your phone can measure: use of speed against the limit of the road you're on, braking and acceleration, cornering, progress and hesitation, and — with the front camera on — mirror checks before turns and junctions. Faults are counted the way the real test counts them: minor, serious, dangerous. Any serious or dangerous fault fails the drive; so do more than 15 minors.

It does not mark manoeuvres (reversing, parking), observation at junctions beyond your mirror checks, signalling, or your judgement of other road users — those need an instructor or supervising driver.

When a mirror check is borderline, the app keeps a short, silent clip of that moment on your phone. After the drive you watch it and answer yes, no, or not sure — your answer overrides the app's guess.

The clip never leaves your phone: it's never uploaded, never sent to any AI service, and never visible to a connected instructor. It's deleted as soon as you answer, and automatically within 48 hours either way.

You share your personal code (in Settings) with your driving instructor. They send a connection request, and nothing is shared until you accept it. Once connected, they can see your drives and debriefs — read-only — so lessons can pick up where your practice left off. They never see your review clips or your email.

Disconnect any time in Settings; their access ends immediately. They can also remove you from their side.

In the app: Profile → Delete account. It permanently deletes your account, drives, analyses and images — this can't be undone. You can also email us a deletion request from your account address.
